Many times, many of us look into a mirror and have a tendency to be critical of ourselves, whether it is based upon how we look, how we act, how we speak, etc. This particular behavior can often make us believe that every single person that we meet carries those same exact judgments towards us. In the age of social media, critiquing ourselves heavily can often create high levels of insecurities that can lead many to feel as though they have nothing to offer, or that they will never encounter genuine connections with others. There have been numerous studies done to determine a correlation between the lack of self-esteem and suicidal ideation.
Social media has allowed for people to create a life that often depicts a life contrary to their actual lifestyle. Creating such standards has often caused many people to feel the strong need to keep up with the Joneses, or in our era, the Kardashians. Just like Hollywood, we get to edit, crop, and filter what we wish to portray when it comes to our lives. However, when the cameras are turned off, the life of any social media user, including high profile figures and celebrities, is revealed by the actual reality that surrounds them. Sometimes those realities are dark, abusive, and oppressive. There is nothing wrong with wishing and hoping for a better quality of life, especially when it is to escape the aforementioned dark realities. However, for many, it does not come as easily to attain such goals.
Unconditional love from a support system that consists of individuals who do not judge you most certainly can help achieve certain life goals. Judging others who have failed is often a projection of one's own failures. When we judge others, what point do we wish to make besides humiliating the person being judged? In this day and age, it would be hard to find anybody who has lived a squeaky-clean life. So, the next time you catch yourself passing judgment, take a moment to ask yourself, "Why?"
