Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

These words, spoken by one of the most influential figures in American history, resonate with us today more than ever. Amid the social and political climate that Americans face today, it has never been truer that compassion is needed now, more than ever, to help us better understand the diversity of people that make up today's United States.

For centuries, people from all walks of life have arrived in the United States, some with dreams and with privilege, others forced and bound, separated from families and loved ones. Many have served and fought for this country, others have died to maintain Her democracy. But as the nation grows, The People have not forgotten the history that makes up the United States. Nor should they. Because wherever they can learn from history, they can work to make up for the past, all while making plans for future generations of Americans to be able to help continue fulfilling the dream Dr. King envisioned for the United States, where people of all races (and backgrounds) could coexist in harmony.

Despite his resilience, however, historians have discussed how Dr. King struggled with depression and suicidal tendencies throughout his life, and how he kept his incidents with depression a closely held secret due to the mental health stigma at that time and concern that civil rights opponents would use it against him. Regardless of any setbacks he might experience, Dr. King still displayed courage, strength and empathy that many see as an example when it comes to knowing how to support others and how to fight against the stigma and discrimination that still affect many people with mental health challenges today.

Dr. King's legacy and dream live on in us and in our society. For those of us who would like to, we can continue honoring Dr. King and his legacy by continuing his work and his mission. As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us remember his words and his deeds, and let us commit to making his dream a reality, as a nation. Let us stand up for justice, peace, and love. Let us reach out to those who are in pain and let us offer them hope and healing. Most importantly, let us be the light that drives out the darkness in our world.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Where do you stand today? How can you honor Dr. King's dream and legacy? How will you make a difference in your own life and in the lives of others?
